What is TIDE?
In February 2019, after hearing stories of racism and discrimination from brave high school students and community members, describing how hard it is to go to school and live in Petaluma, 17 community members from nine different schools created TIDE: Team for Inclusivity, Diversity and Equity.
TIDE works with youth, communities, and schools to ensure that everyone in our schools is treated fairly. We do this through dialogue, education, and advocacy designed to create greater equity and inclusion.
What has TIDE done so far?
Since February 2019, TIDE has accomplished the following:
TIDE has established teams at the following elementary schools: McNear, Grant, Mary Collins School at Cherry Valley, McKinley, Live Oak Charter, and Valley Vista.
Between August 2019 and February 2020 TIDE hosted six community trainings that were free to teachers and school staff. More than 170 participants attended, including 50+ teachers/administrators, from 15 different schools and six different school districts. Topics included: Building Equity Literacy in Our Ourselves, Navigating Dissent and Establishing Sustainability, Intersectional Allied Behavior and Dismantling Whiteness.
TIDE successfully advocated for policy change through the district to ensure that Petaluma City School librarians have two half-day professional development days.
TIDE has initiated Listening Lunches in Petaluma City Schools to discuss specific matters related to inclusivity, diversity, and equity with teachers, administrators, staff, parents, and community stakeholders.
“TIDE is a wonderful example of how community and schools can work together to provide wrap-around supportive environment for all our children, but especially those who are minorities of any kind. By doing so, we can eliminate the opportunity and achievement gaps that continue to plague public education.”

“Collaboration is often how we best accomplish our goals, and TIDE has excelled at it. An organization that seeks to change the narrative and place a much needed priority on inclusion, diversity and equity has been wanting here for generations. An organization that also seeks to teach others how to be healthy and proactive allies is just as essential. With proper support and growth, TIDE will feed two birds with one piece of bread by improving school climate and empowering parents and students.”
